"You can make many things out of wood, but not trees"– Jan Sobotka
Wood is a very knowed and used material in our everyday life.
But what is wood? Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. Wood is an extremely functional , ecological and biodegrable material.
What is wood used for? Wood has been used for thousands of years for both fuel and as construction material. Also, we produce PAL, MDF and OSB out of wood. At a global scale, wood is mostly used as a fuel: wood gives aprox. 3,5kwh/kg (1 cubic meter wood = 0,14 tons oil = 1480 kwh). Wood has a long history of being used as a fuel, which sadly continues to this day, mostly in rural ares of the world. Hardwood is preferred over softwood because it creates less smoke and burns longer. Wood has also been an important construction material since human began building shelters, houses and boats. The Earth contains about 434 billion cubic meters of growing stock forest, 47 % of which is commercial!
But what can we do to enjoy this extremely neccessarily resource for a longer period of time? Wood recyling is one way to go. Recycling wood or recycling timber is the process of turning waste timber into usable products . Recycling timber is a practice that was popularized in the early 1990s as issues as deforestation and climate changes .
Tree branches, stumps, pallets and clean scrap wood from construction sites are all examples of clean waste wood. Recycling wood reduces the cutting of new trees which in turns preserves the forest habitat of many birds and animals and reduces the incidence of soil erosion. Another way to improve the environment is to plant new trees and expand our local green places. Furniture that cannot be used without being repared its redone. This means that the furniture is cleaned, fixed, repainted before it is resold .Wood waste also comes from old buildings, bridges, which are demolated and sorted. At the same time, rocks are being recycled. And its sorted and reused. Let's think of an example: A boatman carved into his paddles two words. Into one paddle he carved the word: " faith " and into the other the word: "actions". Asked by his customers the meaning of this worlds he simply explained: if you sail with only one paddle, " faith ", we will go nowhere and just sail in a circle, but if you sail with both, you will move forward.
If you have faith you need to take actions and you will reach your goal. In an interview given by Egger Romania, Rădăuți, the CEO says: ‚‚We, as a company, built an recycling platform in Bucharest and in the of Bucharest, in the city Cernica, where we colect wood waste, from both big and small companies, that work with wood or import wood, from food wrapings to old furniture, or wood that comes from cleanings made in parks."
From both the example, and the interview we understand that only with big efforts and financial investments we will succed in protecting the environment and to respect the nature at its rightful value.
So that's why team Green Volunteers supports and encourages wood recycling for a better world!
