The most common form of water pollution in and around the cities is plastic bottle pollution, those plastic bottles which, because of the fact that they are cheap and easy to to produce, are used to be filled with various liquids both drinkable and undrinkable and they can be found in all shops and stores. Widely affordable and ready to everyone’s grasp, they can be found thrown everywhere, in every possible and impossible place, on rivers’ banks, where they are taken by water and get to bigger rivers where they can create „little plastic islands”.
That happens here in Baia Mare as well, where Sasar river, that crosses the city, brings within all the plastic waste met in its way and „stores” it on its banks. Among plastic bottles and litter, ducks can be seen, which, for some years now, have come in sight around the area and have become an attraction for the city residents.
One thing that many people don’t know is that a plastic bottle downgrades naturally in times from ten to hundreds of years, depending on environmental conditions.
So, what can we do? To give up on them is quite hard, as they have a lot of conveniences. One solution would be to reduce the using and choose instead products stored in longer lasting wrappings, thus avoiding disposables and not throw litter to improper places and, extremely important, to discourage such actions when we witness them.
We should search for information and help others search for it and understand the seriousness of the situation and the ways we can lower negative consequences.
